An American couple visiting the area climbed the Hill on the afternoon of May 29. Scrambling to the top, they found an apparently bottomless hole, several feet in diameter, right at the center of the flat circular area. They had no way of knowing that it had only just appeared. They were bemused by yet another example of English eccentricity: leaving a dangerous pit, without even a handrail, on top of a national monument.

The summer of 2000 will shape up to be the worst for forest and brush fires worldwide since data began to be recorded. Already in the US, it is the worst since 1988. As hundreds of fires remained out of control across the west and more are erupting every day, the US is attempting to support exhausted firefighters with Marines. The 3rd Battalion 16th Field Artillery from Ft. Hood, Texas, will arrive in Boise today and be transported to the a nearby fire area. A second battalion has been ordered from the Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. Their training will begin on Friday, August 4. Dry lightning–from thunderstorms that do not drop rain–is blamed for most of the fires. George Filer is the editor of the highly respected UFO chronicle Filer’s Files. He has been involved in UFO research for twenty years and has over 5,000 flying hours with the Air Force. In Filer’s Files #30, he discusses a personal contrail sighting on July 9, 2000 that has left him extremely uneasy. He also reports on Louisiana MUFON Director Greg Avery’s astonishing presentation on his own contrail observations at the recent MUFON national convention in St. Louis. In addition there is an incredible report of a gigantic contrail event in Australia that was so extensive and so extremely unusual that people stopped their cars on highways to observe it.

Alone among world religious leaders, the Dalai Lama has been excluded from the UN Millennium Peace Summit, despite being the winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace prize.

Pressure from the Chinese has forced this exclusion and as usual, the U.S. hasn’t protested. These days, our government seems to be run by people whose main interest is trading with the Chinese, to the exclusion of any and all moral concerns. When I look at our leading presidential candidates, I know this will only get worse in the future.

For fifty years after World War II, we supported one terrible dictatorship after another, in order to stop the spread of Communism. Latin America is just now beginning to recover from this policy. Africa may not make it.
