The news has been rife with sex scandals lately–something you’d think our society would finally be mature enough to shrug off.

The affair of General David Petraus, and the somehow related affair of General John Allen, don’t make sense to a lot of us. It’s true that high testosterone guys who like to take risks, such as politicians and soldiers, often get caught up in this sort of thing, but I, for one, can’t figure out what this has to do (in Petraus’ case) with an ability to lead troops abroad or head the CIA. It’s not as if he was bedding some jihadist spy.

Whitley and I love cabaret, especially chanteuses singing the Great American Song Book. They closed our favorite venue for this in New York City, so now we’re searching out new places to hear those wonderful old songs.

We went to Disney Hall to hear the great singer Barbara Cook last night, but first we went to lunch with a friend who is about to embark on the adventure of pairing up with a widower she’s met who lives across the country. Two grown children who live with him are part of this package, and while she gets along with them well, it will be an emotionally fraught task to replace their mother.

In tough economic times, the Presidential election is practically handed to the other party. What happened this time? I think women made the difference.

Woman make up the majority of voters in this country, so it’s always a mistake to alienate them.

First of all, a Republican made a major gaffe: Republican representative Todd Akin used the unfortunate term "legitimate rape," and said that women have a biological reaction to rape that makes rape victims unlikely to get pregnant.

And Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock (another Republican) added the final touch by saying said that pregnancies resulting from rape are part of God’s plan, that they were "intended to happen."
