UPDATE! Speaking of waiting, I’m in the hospital after a fall downstairs caused by sudden instability that came about because my ventricular shunt, which controls pressure in my brain, had failed. (This happens to these things. It’s nothing to do with my tumor, which remains stable.) If there is any place that involves waiting, it’s a hospital. We wrote about this in Miraculous Journey, and this visit proved no exception to the rule. But once the waiting is over, the doctors can work their wonders. I would not be here today without doctors. They are my shamen.

The Winter Olympics are about to start and NFL football is about to end. I have to admit that I’m not terribly interested in luge. In fact, this is always a season of regret for me, my favorite sport is NFL Football. I have a special way of watching it. I like to watch it with the sound muted. That way, I can read a book in my lap but not miss any great plays.

UPDATE: I am using this technique more and more. I used it while watching the Olympics and the Westminster Dog Show at the same time, jumping between channels. When Whitley asked who won the gold, I blurted out, ‘why, the Wire-Haired Terrier, of course.’ He’s not up on sports, so he just said ‘oh.’ Luge was on the Olympics at the time. Who did win the gold? In my present state of life, the question of whether or not we survive death has become of great interest to me. If we don’t, then I’m never going to know, so that doesn’t really bear much thinking about. But if we do, then I have a lot of questions about how to prepare, how to understand the life I am taking with me, and where I might be going.

Funny about being sick—I find myself more interested in everyday life than in anything supernatural. And yet, ghosts are still wandering through our lives. For instance, a ghost has turned up to help my maid for two weeks in a row. She’s a nice assistant, but she’s nobody I ever knew. At least, I don’t recognize her. Obviously, she can’t do much, but she’s there anyway.
