First it was birds falling out of the sky in Louisiana and Texas. Then hundreds of tiny crabs were found dead on a beach in England. Large numbers of dead fish were found washed up on beaches in Arkansas, Maryland and New Zealand in January, and now they’re turning up in Florida. Even pine trees are dying!

Birds and fish are mysteriously dying all over the world, but they aren’t the only creatures this is happening to. There have been mass deaths of cows in Wisconsin and seals in Labrador (and there are probably many others that we haven’t heard about yet).

First it was redwinged blackbirds falling out of the sky–in two places in the US and also in Sweden. Then it was thousands of dead fish. Now it’s doves: A thousand of them have dropped out of the sky in Italy, all with blue stains on their beaks. Officials says the blue tint indicates hypoxia, which is a lack of oxygen that can confuse animals.

In the January 7th edition of the Telegraph, Nick Pisa quotes a local Italian newspaper as saying, "Let’s hope it is poisoning or an illness because that would be easier to deal with than it being a sign the world is coming to an end."

UPDATE: Two million fish died in Chesapeake Bay on December 6. There have now been diebacks reported of birds and fish from the US, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The mystery started when thousands of red-winged blackbirds and starlings were found lying on the ground in a one-mile area in Beebe, a town about 40 miles from Little Rock. In addition to the bird deaths, there was a fish kill in the Arkansas River involving a hundred thousand Drum Fish, a kill of at least 40,000 crabs in England, and hundreds of Snapper Fish in New Zealand.
