Around 2,000 coyotes live in Chicago and New York and their suburbs–and probably in the big city nearest to YOU as well. They were once restricted to the Southwest, but they’ve spread across the country in the last 100 years. When your backyard got too crowded, they moved into the alleys between the skyscrapers.

Coyotes are smart, extremely adaptable and reproduce quickly. They’ll eat almost anything: rabbits, rats, geese, fruit, and insects–and maybe even your pet kitty.

Billboards advertising fast food may inspire people to eat more, and thus gain weight. Advertisers are careful not to place billboards advertising cigarettes or liquor too close to schools, but fat people are everywhere, so there’s no way to regulate these ads.

A team of researchers walked around Los Angeles and New Orleans, noting every outdoor advertisement they saw. When they compared the height and weight of over 2,000 residents in these locations, after paying them to answer a telephone survey, they found that for every 10% increase in food ads, the odds of being obese increased by 5%.

An analysis of a rock sample collected by NASA’s Curiosity rover shows ancient Mars could have supported living microbes.

Scientists identified sulfur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and carbon–some of the key chemical ingredients for life–in the powder Curiosity drilled out of a rock near an ancient stream bed there.

Mars researcher John Grotzinger says, "We have characterized a very ancient, but strangely new ‘gray Mars,’ where conditions once were favorable for life. Curiosity is on a mission of discovery and exploration, and as a team we feel there are many more exciting discoveries ahead of us in the months and years to come."

Residents of Ocala, Florida are observing large numbers of helicopters seemingly accompanying unknown planes, but neither civil nor military authorities can identify the aircraft, which have been seen a number of times on recent nights. This is reminiscent of the ‘ghost planes’ phenomenon that haunted Norway in the 1930s, and of the 1980 Cash-Landrum case near Houston, where a large number of military helicopters were seen accompanying a flaming triangle device. Witnesses to that event received catastrophic radiation doses. A search party in the Norwegian case was sent looking for the ghost planes and never returned.
