Whitley and I are living part time in California while we help produce the motion picture of his book The Grays. We’re renting an apartment in a nice old building owned by a nice old couple who bought it half a century ago. It’s a small building with only 10 apartments, so I’ve gotten to know everyone in it, at least to say “hi” to. I also regularly greet the people living in the building across from us. Los Angeles is a much friendlier place than it’s given credit for being.

A lot of the technology that can have a dramatic effect on global warming is right at our fingertips, if we would only screw it in.

Switching to low-energy light bulbs would prevent a total of 16 million tons of carbon dioxide from being added to our atmosphere in the next 25 years. Andy McSmith & Emily Dugan write in the Independent that the International Energy Agency says that the light bulbs used in homes and offices are a major cause of the current climate change. Low-energy bulbs also use less electricity, although they do cost more to buy. However, they last 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs, and have a life span of around six years. Low energy light bulbs are also known as compact fluorescent bulbs.

Scientists have recently discovered that most people in the US are lonely. Now it turns out a lot of us have insomnia too (maybe we need to meet someone nice to sleep with). But many of us don’t realize we have a problem, because we THINK we sleep more than we actually DO.

Now that we know we can help alleviate global warming by doing something as simple as changing a light bulb, it’s time to do something bigger: invent a whole new type of power. A group of engineers have done just that: they?ve invented a combustion chamber where fuel is burned that will power a motor that gives off almost NO pollution at all?and it’s NOT nuclear.

The aim of this new combustion chamber is to reduce theproduction of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOx),which cause smog and other pollution. However, it’s not perfect: it still produces just as much of the greenhouse gas Carbon Dioxide (CO2) as a conventional engine.
