In birds, bright male plumage indicates a healthy immune system (and a bird worth mating with). In humans, men with high levels of the sex hormone testosterone are more handsome and they also have stronger immune systems.
The link between testosterone and attractiveness was strongest in men with low levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which suppresses the immune system (and also the male sex drive!)
