Passengers on two flights, one from Atlanta to Paris and the other from Prague to Montreal are being urged by the Centers for Disease Control to undergo testing for an “extensively drug-resistant TB, and the passenger diagnosed with the disease has been quarantined. The last time the CDC took such an action was in 1963, when an individual suffering from smallpox was quarantined.
The victim traveled from Atlanta to Paris on Air France flight 385 on May 12, and from Prague to Montreal on CSA flight 104 on May 24. While TB is rare in North America, there is no way to stop a drug resistant form of the disease from spreading, so it represents a potentially serious danger. The fact that the disease requires close contact means that it will not spread like an epidemic, but anybody who spent many hours on a plane with an infectious individual is definitely at risk.
