Worldtribune.com reports that the U.S. Marine Corps hasstipulated that at least one Arabic speaker be included inevery unit in Iraq. There’s great concern in the militarythat relying on hand signals and a few spoken words of eachothers’ languages puts our soldiers in jeopardy, and there’sno guarantee that the Iraqi interpreters currently useddon’t have their own agendas, which could cause them tomisreport the words being said by each side. The demand forcourses in the Arabic language has soared at the Marinetraining base in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina.
So far, more than 260 Marines have enrolled in the 20-dayArabic language course given there. The course teachesMarines basic grammar, military vocabulary andconversational Arabic.
