Newswise – Hurricane Katrina could lead to smaller crop yields in corn and soybean fields in Indiana. How can a gulf coast hurricane effect crops so far away? It’s because these farmers have lost access to shipping routes along the Mississippi River. Agronomists are advising them to postpone harvesting their crops, if possible. There may be shortages of soy and cattle feed in Western states.

Grain-carrying ships are just now starting to move into the Gulf through New Orleans ports for again. About 75% of the nation’s corn and soybeans goes through Louisiana.

Unless we’re vegetarians, we’ll probably be concerned to see beef prices rise. But most of us don’t eat many soy products in the West?but maybe we should, since it’s been discovered that postmenopausal women who consumed high daily levels of soy protein have reduced risk of bone fracture.

Women experience accelerated bone loss at a rate of 3 to 5% per year for about five to seven years after menopause, putting them at a high risk for bone fractures. After much controversy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration now advises older women not to take hormone therapy and instead suggests alternatives such as exercise and increasing intake of calcium and vitamin D. Most milk is fortified with D and it is also the ?sunshine vitamin? which your body absorbs when you?re outside. Exercise?whether inside or out?increases the thickness of weight-bearing bones.

It’s going to be harder than ever to say, I’m still hungry. Maybe we need the help of the kitchen witch! If love news at the edge–news you just can’t find anywhere else–visit our website daily. And make sure we’ll be here tomorrow: subscribe today. Art credit: http://www.freeimages.co.uk
