Halloween tends to make us fat, since we stock up on lots of candy corn and other special treats to give to the kids who come to our door, and we always end up eating some of it ourselves. Another Halloween tradition is watching horror movies–and these can help compensate for the candy-eating, because recent research has revealed that they help burn off calories!
The study showed that calorie burning increased by a third when the movie watcher was horrified. In the October 30th edition of the Toronto Star, Malene Arpe quotes researcher Richard Mackenzie as saying, "As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenalin. It is this release of fast-acting adrenalin, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the basal metabolic rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories."
In the study, people who watched a 90-minute horror film were likely to burn up to 113 calories: the same amount as a half-hour walk. The top calorie-burner was "The Shining," which used up 184 calories.
After that, the top calorie burners were: "Jaws" (161 calories), "The Exorcist" (158 calories), "Alien" (152 calories), "Saw" (133 calories), "A Nightmare of Elm Street (118 calories), "Paranormal Activity" (111 calories), "The Blair Witch Project" (105 calories), and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (107 calories).
