The FBI warned eight of California?s leading movie studios that they could be next on the terrorist hit list. Armed guards were patrolled the streets of the studios and crash barriers were in place across roads leading to film lots. Disney, DreamWorks, Fox, MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Brothers were closed to all but essential staff. Security was also stepped up at Disneyland and the California Adventure theme parks. ?In this environment, we are taking the warning very seriously and taking appropriate measures to enhance our security,? Warner Brotherss spokesman Scott Rowe says.
The actions were taken after a leading intelligence agency, believed to be Israel?s Mossad, told the FBI that terrorists were preparing to strike again. An FBI statement sent to the studios says, ?A film studio in California could be the target of a terrorist bombing attack in retaliation for any possible bombing attacks by the US in Afghanistan.? A separate bulletin sent to law enforcement agencies said the information came from a ?reliable? source through an unnamed foreign intelligence service. California Governor Gray Davis was also told to increase security around nuclear power stations and water plants.
Boston was also warned to be on alert following the discovery of information pointing to a second wave of attacks. Eleven of the people on a list of 237 who are wanted for questioning by the FBI have received flight training. Some of these 11 were booked on Los Angeles-bound flights–one originating from Boston and another from San Antonio.
The flights were cancelled as a precaution.
