One remedy: white paint! – Twelve pathogens could spread into new regions of the world, as a result of global warming. The “Deadly Dozen” list?including such diseases as malaria, bird flu, Ebola, cholera, and tuberculosis?show the broad range of diseases that threaten both humans and animals as the world gets warmer.

Researcher Steven E. Sanderson says, “The term ‘climate change’ conjures images of melting ice caps and rising sea levels that threaten coastal cities and nations, but just as important is how increasing temperatures and fluctuating precipitation levels will change the distribution of dangerous pathogens. The health of wild animals is tightly linked to the ecosystems in which they live and influenced by the environment surrounding them, and even minor disturbances can have far reaching consequences on what diseases they might encounter and transmit as climate changes.”

Remember, we can catch many diseases from animals, so we want to keep them healthy too! Sanderson says, “Monitoring wildlife health will help us predict where those trouble spots will occur and plan how to prepare.”

If we painted all our surfaces white, we could greatly reduce global warming, because white reflects sunlight instead of absorbing it, the way dark colors do. In, Lisa Zyga reports that if the world?s 100 largest cities replaced their dark roofs with white shingles and their asphalt roads with concrete, that alone would offset billions of tons of greenhouse gases. Roofs take up about 25% of the surface of most cities, and pavements take up about 35%. In hot climates, this would also reduce the need for air conditioning by 20%.
