We now not only know that Osama bin-Laden is alive?we know where he is. British special forces say he fled Afghanistan last year and is being protected by tribesmen in his ancestral homeland in Yemen. He’s living in the tribal region of Hadhra Maug, where his father was born. Intelligence has also picked up increased “chatter” from the region of the kind they picked up before September 11.
Evidence that Osama wasn?t killed during the U.S. bombings of the Tora Bora caves last December comes as no surprise to the intelligence agents who?ve been searching for him. They now think he fled Afghanistan last November, before the boming, following opium trafficking routes through eastern Iran and down through the Pakistani desert to the port of Gwador, which is off-limits to foreigners. He?s then thought to have traveled on a small boat across the Arabian Sea to Oman and on to Yemen. The Hadhra Maug tribesmen who are protecting him are fiercely loyal to his family and have long waged war with the government of Yemen. Al-Qaeda terrorists are cementing their ties with the tribe by marrying their daughters. An American official admits, “We left too many windows. We could not seal the border with Pakistan and we failed to monitor shipping particularly in those early days.”
The new evidence surfaced from the thousands of documents captured by Israeli intelligence during raids on buildings used by Hamas. The fact that the U.S. takes this information seriously is shown by the fact that we recently shifted several of our Predator drones to an area where they can spy on Yemen.
