UPDATE – We recently asked the question, Are we about to invade Iran? We now have an two updates on this story, both containing information you won’t learn from US news reports. FURTHER UPDATE: Politicians in Israel seem to be preparing the Israeli public for a military attack on Iran.

Anne Penketh writes in the Independent that Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that individual nations should go beyond the UN economic sanctions and remove the threat of genocide from Iran. About the program of sanctions recommended by the UN, he said that “Either it will stop the nuclear program without the need for a military operation, or it could prepare for it. When we are talking about rallying public opinion on genocide, who will lead the charge if not us?” He also stated that the “genocidal regime” of President Ahmadinejad cannot not be stopped by sanctions.

In the January 6 edition of the UK journal The Spectator, Douglas Davis writes, “Within in next 12 months, the Americans or the Israelis, possibly both, are likely to launch military strikes aimed at crippling Iran?s nuclear ambitions. Those strikes may come sooner rather than later. And they will probably be nuclear.”

In this sobering article, Davis points out that “intervention is essential before Iran’s scientists are able to complete the nuclear cycle?some time during 2007?and start producing weapons-grade uranium. Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denies that the holocaust occurred and has repeatedly said that Israel should be “wiped off the map.” But according to David, containing Iran’s ambitions is not enough, because Iran will be sorely tempted to export its uranium to Middle Eastern terrorist groups, including Hamas (which is functioning in Palestine), in order to create “dirty bombs,” which combine a conventional explosive with radioactive material, such as small amounts of enriched uranium.

Davis writes, “Only the Americans and the Israelis are willing and able to stop the Iranians before they pass the critical enrichment threshold. Ahmadinejad has stated that his country will be able to ?master the fuel cycle” in time for a festival in early February, which marks the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which deposed the Shah.

Iran has around 70 nuclear sites. The US says it is too late to stop Iran’s nuclear program, but that it could be slowed down by precisely targeting as few as 15 of these sites. One problem is that the Iranian sites are buried 200 feet below the earth, under alternating layers of dirt and cement that are designed to absorb the impact of even the deep-penetration bombs of the US military.

The main targets would be the centrifuges, which are essential to producing the enriched uranium needed to build bombs. But these centrifuges have a basic flaw: they are extremely sensitive to earth movement, which would distort them and cause them to stop functioning. A neutron bomb could be the weapons version of an earthquake, since it emits high energy particles. It also has no radioactive fallout, so it would not bring the charge of killing civilians against any country that used it. The Israelis are known to have a stockpile of neutron bombs.

Israel, Europe and the US are not the only countries worried about Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Saudi Arabia, a Sunni country, is worried about Iran, a country of Shiite Muslims, becoming too powerful. Other Middle Eastern countries do not consider the Iranians, who are Persians, to be true Arabs. Iran may want to boost its standing among the other countries in the Middle East by attacking Israel. This could be the reason they are so obviously taunting the Israelis?they may be trying to provoke a preemptive strike, so that they can couch any attack on Israel as a necessary retaliation.

Davis quotes a “senior Israeli source” as saying, “We are talking here about a threat to the survival of the state of Israel, and on that issue there can be no compromise? We will do everything?I mean everything?to prevent another holocaust occurring in Israel. If the Americans do not act, we will act. And that moment might be closer than people dare to imagine.”
