Last November, we reported that astronauts on board the International Space Station heard a strange noise, as if something was hitting the ISS from space. Now they’ve heard the same sound again.
In November, astronaut Mike Foale said, “It sounded like a metal tin can kind of being expanded and compressed. It was a noise that lasted about a second. It sounded like an impact or something.”
Since regular shuttle flights to the ISS have been temporarily suspended, astronauts spend longer periods of time there than they did previously, and the two astronauts who first heard the sound?Foale and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Kaleri?are still there after almost 6 months. They both heard the new sound, and Marcia Dunn quotes Kaleri as saying, “?It sounded sort of like a drum. It sounds sort of like a sheet of something being bent.” The astronauts say the sound came from the same area and sounded exactly the same as last time, and just like before, no damage or evidence of an impact from space junk can be seen on the surface of the ISS.
Russian Mission Control says, “It’s very strange. I doubt that it would be a coincidence that you’re hearing the same thing coming from the same place.”
Kaleri and Foale are probably relieved that they’ll be going home in another 2 1/2 weeks.
