Al Qaeda is trying to get recruits in the Middle East to attack oilfields in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait if the U.S. attacks Iraq, according to U.S. intelligence. The recruitment campaign is looking for radical Muslims in Saudi Arabia and Yemen who are willing to conduct suicide attacks and sabotage. There are also signs that Saddam Hussein’s forces have planted explosives in Iraqi oil fields so they can destroy them rather than hand them over to us. While we may want a future where the West uses less oil, we’ll be dependent on it in the near future, and wide destruction of Middle East oilfields could plunge us back into the Dark Ages.
The Pentagon says U.S. forces will try to prevent Iraqi sabotage of its oil wells. “Recent information revealed that Iraq has received 24 railroad boxcars full of pentolite explosives,” says a Pentagon statement. “U.S. plans are first to prevent the destruction of Iraq’s oil fields and second, if unable to prevent the destruction, to control and mitigate the damage quickly.”
Saudi Arabia and Yemen are considered fertile recruiting grounds for al-Qaeda, despite the fact that the Saudis are supposed to be our friends. Fifteen of the 19 Sept. 11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, and Yemen is the ancestral home of Osama bin-Laden. The October bombings of a French oil tanker in Yemen and nightclubs in Indonesia were part of al-Qaeda’s shift toward economic terrorism.
