If Consciousness is the Source, force, substance and essence of the Universe – as many mystics believe that it is – then everything that exists would necessarily be a manifest expression of Universal Consciousness. There’s certainly nothing new about this notion. What is new is the growing intersection of quantum physics and ancient mysticism, and the application of leading-edge science to understand Near Death Experiences.

There’s been a wide debate about the nature of NDE’s among those who have never had one – particularly those who believe that reality must be sensible and tangible in order to be actual. However, those who have had the life-transforming experience of going through ‘death’s door,’ coming out the Other Side, and then returning once again to the body they’d left behind – have an unshakeable sense of certainty that that’s precisely what they did.

Now, Dr. Stuart Hameroff, Director of the Center of Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona – and British physicist Sir Roger Penrose – are proposing that the Soul is actually a quantum packet of information and intelligence that is temporarily housed in microtubules in the brain and processed there by a quantum biological computer. This packet or ‘program’ of information, they contend, exists before birth, during life, and after death.

In an NDE, according to their theory, the microtubules lose their quantum state and the information within them returns to the Cosmos. As Dr. Hameroff states in the Science Channels Through the Wormhole, ‘if … the patient dies, it’s possible that this quantum information can exist outside the body, perhaps indefinitely, as a soul.’

Needless to say, this theory is controversial. However, the two eminent scientists are convinced that as the field of quantum physics advances, it will be proven to be accurate. Given that their theory has thousands of years of mystical ‘research’ behind it, Dr. Hammeroff and Sir Roger certainly seem to stand a chance of having their perspective validated and vindicated.
