Meat lovers living in the central and southern regions of the country might be opting for a vegetarian lifestyle if meat comes with an unwanted side of a life-threatening allergic reaction. The Texas tick inhabiting these regions is the primary reason for a dangerous allergic reaction to a substance called "alpha gal" in meat.

"Alpha-gal" is a sugar carbohydrate found in red meats such as beef, pork and lamb. Positive alpha-gal rates are 32% higher in lone star tick population areas as compared to other regions. The central and southern regions of the United States have the highest rates of alpha-gal sensitization.

BP was recently given a record fine for mistakes that caused a major oil leak in the Gulf. But there are other threats, besides CEO mistakes, lurking in the deep waters out there.

After World War II, the US government dumped their unexploded bombs into the Gulf of Mexico (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show). The US wasn’t the only country that did this–many governments dumped their unexploded ordinance into oceans and lakes, from 1946 up until the 1970s, when an international treaty made this illegal.

Whitley and I love cabaret, especially chanteuses singing the Great American Song Book. They closed our favorite venue for this in New York City, so now we’re searching out new places to hear those wonderful old songs.

We went to Disney Hall to hear the great singer Barbara Cook last night, but first we went to lunch with a friend who is about to embark on the adventure of pairing up with a widower she’s met who lives across the country. Two grown children who live with him are part of this package, and while she gets along with them well, it will be an emotionally fraught task to replace their mother.
