We have plenty of evidence of the existence of lost, technologically sophisticated civilizations from the past. One of these is remembered in the legend of Atlantis, written about by the Greek philosopher Plato. Greg Little takes his cue from Edgar Cayce, and is looking for Atlantis in the Caribbean. He talks to Whitley about his underwater adventures on this week’s Dreamland. Michele Kambas and Jean Christou write that another researcher, Robert Sarmast, decided to take Plato literally and search for Atlantis in Cyprus. He says, “The island of Cyprus was, or is, part of Atlantis?a mountaintop.”

From a plant in Peru that was flash frozen 5,000 years ago, we have evidence that past climate change happened in hours. Another reason we know there was sudden climate change 5,200 years ago is from the prehistoric man called Otzi, who was frozen in the Alps around that time and only discovered a few years ago, since the Alps are melting. “We know that the Ice Man, a preserved Neolithic hunter exposed by a retreating glacier in the European Alps, was trapped by the ice around 5,200 years ago,” says geologist Lonnie Thompson. “If it happened in the past, it might happen again, and that type of abrupt event in today’s world would mean worldwide chaos, both economically and socially.”

With China going into space, it looked as if there might be a conflict over ownership of the moon. However, now it’s been discovered that it will be impossible to use the moon as a base for space travel or for mining the valuable elements there, because it has almost no water. This is tragic, since the moon contains an element that could solve our oil shortage and greenhouse gas problems.
