With Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton both running for president recently, it may seem that there are plenty of women candidates around, but actually there are relatively few.

Several factors contribute to this gender gap. For one thing, women are substantially more likely than men to see the electoral environment as highly competitive and biased against female candidates (so they don’t jump into the fray). Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin’s candidacies may have actually made this perception worse.

Researchers at the University of Haifa have found a link between the good looks of US politicians and the amount of TV coverage they receive. The possible reason: TV producers think their viewers want to see good-looking people.

Psychologist Gail Mauner says, "TOT occurs when we know the meaning of the word or words we want to retrieve but are unable to access their sounds. The majority of naturally occurring TOT states are linked to proper names and the likelihood of finding oneself in such a state increases as we get older. "

In a new study, political scientists closely measured people’s physiological reactions as they looked at a series of pleasant and unpleasant images. Participants who identified themselves as conservative–and, in particular, those who said they were against gay marriage–had strong physical reactions when shown the gross pictures.
