Want to lose weight? Get enough sleep. Instead of spendingan hour a day jogging, new research shows that if you spendthat time in bed, your diet is more likely to be a success.

Leptin, a chemical released during sleep, controls body fatby letting us know we’re full. Lack of sleep also affectsthe hormones which help burn off calories during the day.

Researchers followed 500 adults, aged 27 to 40, for 13years, and found that their average sleep times declinedfrom 7.7 hours to 7.3 hours for women, and from 7.1 hours to6.9 hours for men. They put on an average of five poundsduring that time, and those who gain the most were the oneswho slept the least.

We’ve always been told that we are what we eat, but in the future, we’ll be told what to eat based on what we are, genetically. “…You may in the future choose your breakfast cereal based on your genes,” says geneticist Peter Singer. “It is hypothetical today but possible that if you have a particular gene, you will be advised to use a cereal that decreases your chance of heart disease and avoid another that would increase the chance of colon cancer.”

We’ve been warned that supersaturated tropical oils, like palm oil and coconut oil, are bad for the heart. These are often used in manufactured baked goods, because they keep them fresh and moist longer. Now a new cooking oil has been developed containing these “dangerous” oils, plus some olive oil and flaxseed oil, which helped men lose a pound a month, without dieting. But it doesn’t seem to work for women.

Over a 27-day period, overweight male volunteers substituted the special oil for regular cooking oil, without changing their diets, and lost an average of one pound. However, women didn’t lose any weight using the special oil. The Canadian researchers who developed the oil say it goes straight to the liver and is burned up there, without adding any fat to the body. read more
