Ever wondered just how much information about you your cell phone carrier has? They keep this information secret, so German Green party politician Malte Spitz whose carrier is the German company Deutsche-Telekom went to court to obtain his records, and the results are chilling: He found that he was being continually being tracked.
When Spitz went to court to find out exactly what his cell phone company knew about him, he found they had an incredible amount of information: In a six-month period, Deutsche Telekom had recorded and saved his travel coordinates more than 35,000 times.
In some cases, you may CHOOSE to be tracked, in order to save money. Progressive, one of the nation’s largest auto insurers, has launched a nationwide ad campaign for its "Snapshot" program, in which drivers can elect to install a small data recorder in their cars that tracks how hard they brake, how far they drive and whether it’s day or night driving. Based on the results, you can save up to 30% on your insurance, an average savings of $150 a year.
In the March 26th edition of the New York Times, Noam Cohen quotes information expert Sarah E. Williams as saying, "We are all walking around with little tags, and our tag has a phone number associated with it, who we called and what we do with the phone. We don’t even know we are giving up that data." It turns out that Spitz’s information was updated whenever he checked his email on his iphone.
Cohen quotes computer expert Matthew Blaze as saying, "At any given instant, a cell company has to know where you are; it is constantly registering with the tower with the strongest signal." And Cohen quotes privacy expert Kevin Bankston as saying, "Phones have become a necessary part of modern life. You have to hand over your personal privacy to be part of the 21st century."
