UPDATE – An asteroid passed by close to the earth in a near miss. One day, we may be directly in the path of an upcoming space rock. This one missed us, but we are STILL in the path of a falling spy satellite!

BBC News reports that a 600-foot-wide asteroid passed by the earth without hitting us. It swept by just outside the moon’s orbit.

We escaped one possible disaster but there’s another one still to come: a large US spy satellite has gone out of control and will fall to earth in late February or March. This is not the first time this has happened and so far, spy satellites have been guided into the ocean through a controlled re-entry, so that no one else can access the secret data that is aboard. This also means that no one on the ground will be harmed by it. Let’s hope it happens this time as well, since the satellite contains rocket fuel which will be harmful to anyone who comes into contact with it.

If the satellite appears to be headed for land, we may try to destroy it with a missile. BBC News quotes US government official Gordon Johndroe as saying, “We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause.”
