Where did dragons come from? They were a popular icon long before dinosaur bones were discovered, and early man came along AFTER the dinosaurs’ demise, so it couldn’t have been a race memory. Also, dragon myths were common in the ancient Mediterranean world, despite the fact that the region contains no dinosaur fossils.
In the November 3-4 edition of the Wall Street Journal, Matt Kaplan writes: "Historically, most monsters were spawned not from pure imagination but from aspects of the natural world that our ancestors did not understand. Whales seen breaking the surface of the ancient oceans were sea monsters, the fossilized bones of prehistoric humans were the victims of Medusa, the roars of earthquakes were thought to emanate from underground beasts."
Some anthropologists think that dragon myths stem from snake attacks, but for most scientists, it remains a mystery.
