We need ethanol more than ever, even if it doesn’t reduce air pollution as much as scientists had hoped it would! It’s especially needed in China, where they are now trading their bicycles for cars at a fast pace. Since we do so much economic trading with China, can’t we influence them to adopt some pollution controls, before we all smother? Let’s sell them some of our CORN!

Clifford Coonan reports from China that the smog in Beijing is reminiscent of Los Angeles before catalytic converters and special gas formulations were mandated: the sky is yellow and the air is thick with smog. There are days in Australia when everyone is told to wear a hat, because of the high incidence of skin cancer there. In Beijing, there are regularly days when people are told not to go outside.

According to the World Bank, 16 of the world’s 20 most polluted cities are in China. 400,000 people there die every year from air pollution-related illnesses and scientists say the air will get 4 times more polluted in the next 15 years if something doesn’t change.

Since China and the US have become so dependent on each other economically, it would be a good idea for us to pressure China to put some California-style pollution controls in place, since one country’s pollution affects us all.
