Newswise – You may not realize this, but your saliva fights toothdecay. It can also be used to diagnose diseases, and notonly diseases of the mouth. This is good news for those ofus who hate blood tests and can’t afford expensive CT scansand MRIs. Dental expert David T. Wong says, “?We’re lookingat the possibility of diagnosing high impactdiseases?[saliva can be] a potential diagnostic tool topaint an insightful view of the body’s health.” So what’sthe connection to raisins? It tuns out they are an excellentfood for a healthy mouth.

Dental researcher Christine Wu has found that raisins fightbacteria in the mouth that cause cavities and gum disease,so even though they may be perceived as too sweet and sticky(and they are NOT a good food for dieters or diabetics),they make an excellent snack for kids. Wu says, “Ourlaboratory analyses showed that?this popular snack foodsuppressed the growth of oral bacteria associated withcaries and gum disease.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Wong plans to analyze saliva to detectdiseases such as breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancers,Alzheimer’s, AIDS, diabetes and osteoporosis.
