We recently reported that according to the (U.K.) Sunday Express, Osama bin-Laden?s hiding place, in the mountains bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, is being monitored by U.S. satellites. Now Yossi Melman writes in the Haaretz Daily that Iran’s official IRNA news agency says bin-Laden has been captured.
A senior U.S. defense official says it’s just “another piece of stray voltage that’s passing around out there,” while Pakistani Army spokesman General Shaukat Sultan says, “that information is wrong.” However, the U.S. might want to keep bin-Laden’s capture undercover while they try to get information out of him about future terrorist plans. There is speculation that Saddam Hussein’s capture actually occurred earlier than its announcement, so troops could interrogate him on the whereabouts of his supporters.
Tehran radio based their story about bin-Laden’s capture on “knowledgeable sources,” saying he was actually apprehended “some time ago.” They also say U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s recent visit to Pakistan was related to the capture and that Bush “is intending to use it for propaganda maneuvering in the presidential election.”
Shamim Shahed, bureau chief for “The Nation,” a Pakistani English-language newspaper, has been cited as the source of this report, but he says, “I never said this, but I have for the last year been saying that he is not far away. He is within their (the Americans) reach, and they can declare him arrested anytime.”
