Hampton Court Palace in the U.K., where Henry VIII used to live, has closed-circuit security cameras that recently picked up the image of a ghost?which may be Henry himself. “We’re baffled too?it’s not a joke, we haven’t manufactured it,” says spokeswoman Vikki Wood. “We genuinely don’t know who it is or what it is.”

Jack Garland writes that security guards were trying to figure out who kept leaving one of the fire doors open. When they checked the security video, they saw the “ghost.” “It was incredibly spooky because the face just didn’t look human,” says security guard James Faukes. “My first reaction was that someone was having a laugh, so I asked my colleagues to take a look. We spoke to our costumed guides, but they don’t own a costume like that worn by the figure. It is actually quite unnerving.”

However, a close look at the video reveals that the ‘ghost’ had to open and close the door it went through. This would make Hampton Court not only haunted, but haunted by the world’s only solid ghost.

The palace was built in 1525 and is a popular tourist attraction. Henry the VIII had seven wives, and his third wife, Jane Seymour, died in childbirth there. Her son’s nurse was buried there in 1562 and in 1829 her tomb was disturbed by builders. Around that time, an odd whirring noise began to be heard. The noise was traced to a brick wall, where workmen discovered a small room containing an old spinning wheel.

Henry’s fifth wife, Catherine Howard, was kept a prisoner at the palace before she was executed. The ghosts of both Jane and Catherine have been seen around the palace.

But they’ve never been seen using security bars to open and close exit doors. At least, not so far.

We can’t let ghosts take over?sometimes we have to hunt them down or talk to them.
