The Bible tells us that the love of money is the root of all evil, but it actually may be the root of all DISEASE, because new diseases are being spread by commerce (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this incredible show). When business executives visit their colleagues and potential customers in cities around the world, they bring their diseases with them, in the same way that Europeans spread lethal new diseases to the Native Americans they first encountered.

The October 13-19th edition of the Economist gives one example: "On October 2nd a British traveler, flying home to Glasgow from Afghanistan, began to feel ill. Within hours he was diagnosed with Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, a virus nasty enough for him to be put onto a military transport aircraft for transfer to an isolation hospital in London. Less than 24 hours later he was dead."

And this is nothing new: The spreading of diseases worldwide began as free trade rose in the mid-19th century. The Economist quotes researcher David Quammen as saying, "(Contagious diseases) have become tariffs by another name." (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this great show too!)
