Astronauts could be a step closer to visiting Mars if they travel there in a craft that is powered by fusion (although they may have to go to the moon first, in order to get the fuel. They may also have to wait until the dust clears).
A fusion-powered rocket could clear many of the hurdles that block deep space travel, including long times in transit, exorbitant costs and health risks.
Researcher John Slough says, "Using existing rocket fuels, it’s nearly impossible for humans to explore much beyond Earth. We are hoping to give us a much more powerful source of energy in space that could eventually lead to making interplanetary travel commonplace."
