Scientists say that hurricane Katrina, which is being called the worst weather disaster ever to hit the US, is not a unique event. Global warming is causing more storms in the Atlantic and ocean temperatures and trade winds?the two forces behind a hurricane?are increasing in the Caribbean and North Atlantic.
The group of UK scientists who make up Tropical Storm Risk predicted earlier this year that the Atlantic would be hit by 22 tropical storms during the six month hurricane season, which runs from June through November. This would be the worst hurricane season ever recorded and more than twice as many since record started being kept in 1851. They predicted that seven of the storms would hit the US and three would be hurricanes. So far, there have been five named hurricanes in the Atlantic, two of which have hit the US, and the hurricane season isn’t over yet.
