September, 2004, has been a terrible month on planet earth. We have suffered one of the greatest sequence of storms in recent memory, with devastation from the United States to China to Bangladesh.

As I am writing this, the death toll in the United States is close to a hundred. At least 600 people have been killed in Haiti, 64 in Grenada, and Grenada has been ruined as a country, with every hotel on the island damaged or destroyed, the electrical system destroyed and the nutmeg plantations entirely destroyed. Both of Grenada’s major industries, tourism and nutmeg farming, are ruined.

In Bangladesh this September, at least 800,000 people have been stranded by floodwaters and are living in waist deep water because they have no other place to go.

After reading many Communion Letters, we’ve discovered that the visitor experience runs in families. Xavier writes: When I was eight and I lived with my father at my grandfather’s house, I would occasionally sleep on the floor in my grandfather’s bedroom. I remember very clearly to this day (twenty years later) that one night I awoke and I was unable to move my head much, as it was held in a vice-like contraption. I remember being afraid, but my mind told me I had rolled under his bed and I gave up trying to move my head and fell back to sleep.

We’ve recently posted stories about birds and butterflies missing from their usual haunts and sometimes turning up in strange places. This could be due to global warming or to the pole shift now in progress, which will affect migratory animals. Weve also posted a story about leaves changing much earlier than usual, which predicts an especially cold winter ahead. Global warming doesnt necessarily make things warmerit makes some places colder. And most of all, it creates weather extremes, as people in the path of the recent barrage of Florida hurricanes have discovered.
