An asteroid may have wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, but an earlier one probably allowed the rise of the giant creatures, who dominated the planet for 135 million years. Charles Seabrook writes in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Federal water experts have presented data suggesting that metro Atlanta is taking all the water that Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River can provide, decades before it was forecast to have reached that limit.
If the assessment is verified by data being collected and analyzed in coming weeks, it could halt new development in the region. Metropolitan Atlanta would have to stop growing, or enact tougher conservation measures, or find new sources of water.

China is planning to establish a base on the Moon to mine its mineral resources. Beijing has not yet put a human astronaut into space, but Chinese scientists say they expect to do so within three years.
Ouyang Ziyuan, a chief scientist with China’s Moon exploration program, says they are planning to launch a manned flight by 2005 and their first mission to the Moon in 2010. In March China successfully launched its third unmanned test flight of a Shenzhou space capsule. Only two countries – the former Soviet Union and the United States – have achieved manned space flight.
