In recent months, a number of U.S. states have been enacting new legislation to govern the use of renewable energy within their territories — for both better and for worse. Illinois, Michigan and Ohio have passed new laws that range from protecting current green energy law, to progressive new ones.

These moves by IL, MI and OH are contrary to the intended ecological policies of the new administration under President Donald Trump, policies that themselves run contrary to good ecological — and ultimately economical — sense.

A major part of President Elect Donald Trump’s election platform was the promise to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States, jobs that manufacturing companies had moved to other countries where labor was cheaper. Trump recently warned automotive company BMW that they could be hit with an import tariff of up to 35 percent on cars made in Mexico, in an attempt to prompt the company to build in the U.S. instead. But what Trump doesn’t realize is that even if those manufacturing plants do return, the jobs associated with them might not, as robots have been steadily replacing the humans that have been performing them in the interim.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, along with a host of other investment partners, is starting a $1 billion investment group, called the Breakthrough Energy Ventures fund, aimed at fighting climate change through investing in the business of clean energy production. The BEV fund, intended to run for 20 years, will be focusing on investing in companies that are developing new technologies that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the areas of agriculture, electricity generation and storage, transportation, industrial processes, and energy-system efficiency.

“Anything that leads to cheap, clean, reliable energy we’re open-minded to,” explains Gates, acting as BEV’s chairman.

It would be a gross understatement to say that president-elect Donald Trump hasn’t kept his intentions regarding environmental policy a secret — he’s outright declared climate change to be a hoax, promised to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency, pull out of the Paris Agreement, withdraw all funding from the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, and reverse various environmental initiatives put in place by the previous administration. Needless to say, these plans do not bode well for the environment.
