In LiveScience.com, Corey Binns quotes Dennis Twombly, of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) as saying, “The severity of a hangover is related to the blood alcohol level you reach, how rapidly you drink, and the amount you drink. After the alcohol has been cleared from the system, a hangover can last for 8 to 24 hours, depending on how much you’ve consumed.” The best way to deal with this is to sleep it off, despite the fact that alcohol tends to disrupt the quality of your sleep.
Drinking caffeine and taking a cold shower won’t help remove the alcohol from your system, although these remedies may make you feel better temporarily. Drinking more alcohol only increases the level of alcohol in your system, which will soon make you feel much worse. Tylenol can ease your pain, but when mixed with alcohol, it can be bad for your liver. Antacids may make your feel better and are generally safe, and so is aspirin.
Drink water or sodas, along with the alcohol, in order to stay hydrated. Eat food while drinking, since this slows the absorption of the alcohol. Fruit is especially good to eat, since it can make hangovers less painful.
