Astonished scientists have never seen anything like it. – A solar eruption has appeared that scientists are describingas “jaw dropping” and “amazing.” The activity, on the sun’seastern limb, has the appearance of a gigantic volcano andmay be a precursor to a major sunspot. For some months now, solar scientists have been expecting the new solar max tobegin. In January, there was a reverse polarity sunspotthat usually heralds the beginning of a solar max, but itwas followed by little activity, and none that had thesignature of the new cycle. In 2006, NASA scientistspredicted that the upcoming cycle would be one of the mostintense on record, and it appears to be starting off withthe proverbial bang. The eruption does not pose a hazard at this time. For more pictures and information, go toSpaceweather.com.
