Is Oil Forever?

While most oil experts think we’re running out fast, a small group thinks that oil is a renewable substance, produced under high heat and pressure deep within the Earth’s crust. That means we would never run out of oil, since it’s always being created. However, if we keep burning it forever, it will be the end of us, since it produces greenhouse gases that accelerate global warming.

Chris Bennett writes in WorldNetDaily.com that oil may not come from dead dinosaurs and thus be a finite resource. It may instead be a natural product, that is being constantly replenished. Scientists who support this theory say that crude oil forms as a natural process between the mantle and the crust, between 5 and 20 miles deep underground. They says that huge concentrations of methane exist at great depth beneath the Earth. Where the mantle and crust meet, 20,000 feet beneath the surface, rapidly rising streams of compressed methane-based gasses hit areas of high temperature, causing the condensation of heavier hydrocarbons, which become crude oil. Other methane-based gases are stored in reservoirs as natural gas.

Researcher Thomas Gold says that oil extracted from different depths in the same oil field all has the same chemistry, and doesn’t vary the way fossils do with increasing depth. Also, oil is found in areas which did not support enough prehistoric life to have created it. Gold says that oil is a “renewable, primordial soup continually manufactured by the Earth under ultrahot conditions and tremendous pressures. As this substance migrates toward the surface, it is attacked by bacteria, making it appear to have an organic origin dating back to the dinosaurs.”

Oil researcher J.F. Kenney says, “Competent physicists, chemists, chemical engineers and men knowledgeable of thermodynamics have known that natural petroleum does not evolve from biological materials since the last quarter of the 19th century.”

If this is true, it will buy us some time to discover oil alternatives, because one thing that is not endlessly renewable is our climate and we’ve realized we’re destroying it by burning fuel that releases greenhouse gases.
