Exposure when pregnant leads to trouble later – Here’s something frightening (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show): While Pesticides have already been linked to disease, now they have been linked to one of the major scary problems in today’s classrooms: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Exposure to organophosphate pesticides before birth can increase susceptibility to attention disorders, meaning that pregnant women should stay away from pesticides, which also affect breast feeding.
Exposure to a certain type of pesticides called OP pesticides can adversely affect brain development. They target the nervous systems of insects by affecting the activity of neurotransmitters, which in humans plays a critical role in brain development and is involved in attention and short-term memory. Infants and young children are much more vulnerable to OP exposures than adults are because their ability to produce the enzyme that detoxifies OP pesticides is still developing.
A study was made of Mexican-American living in the Salinas Valley of California, an area of intensive agriculture where more than 235,000 kg of pesticides are applied annually. Their children
