A secret chamber, which was hidden for 400 years and may have been used by early Masons, has just been discovered in the UK. The room is about 6 feet high, with 6 feet by 5 feet of floor space, and the walls are plastered with Masonic symbols (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show). The room may have been used as an early form of Masonic lodge before Freemasonry was established in England in 1717.

BBC News quotes Laura Malpas, of the UK National Trust, as saying that the room is "a fascinating and puzzling space" with walls that include "frankly odd Latin texts" (that) tell the reader things such as ‘Do not eat of those things with a black tail’ or ‘Check your tongue, your belly and your lust, the best thing is to enjoy someone else’s madness.’"

The room was found behind a panel in a house that is owned by the Trust. House manager Edward Bartlett made the discovery after deciding to investigate the cupboard while locking up for the night. BBC quotes Malpas as saying, "With a torch he discovered an entrance to a small concealed chamber, hidden in the paneling of the room."
