We’re learning how to grill safer burgers, but in order to fight global warming, we may have to give up our hamburgers and become vegetarians.
The problem is not just that cattle farts produce methane, which is a major greenhouse gas. In New Scientist, Daniele Fanelli quotes Karen Batra, of the Colorado National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, as saying, “Methane emissions from beef cattle are declining, thanks to innovations in feeding practices.”
No, the problem is more complex that that: Fanelli reports that “a kilogram of beef is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution than driving for 3 hours while leaving all the lights on back home.” Japanese researcher Akifumi Ogino found that it’s a combination of things?from feeding and transporting cattle to fertilizer to water pollution?all of which need to take place to put a steak on our plate.
She quotes Su Taylor of the Vegetarian Society in the UK as saying, “?One of the easiest things you can do [to reduce global warming] is to stop eating meat.”
