It took a few hours, but the code Mr. Justice Smith embeddedin his ruling in the DaVinci Code case has been cracked. Thecipher reads, “Smithy Code Jackie Fisher who are youDreadnought.” This is a reference to Admiral Jackie Fisherwho was responsible for the great British battleship theDreadnought, which was launched a hundred years ago. JusticeSmith believes that Fisher, who modernized the British navy,has been overlooked by history. The code was based on theFibonacci number system, and contained a typographical errorto add to the difficulty.

In the recent plagiarism suit brought in the UK against novelist Dan Brown, author of the DaVinci Code, judge Peter Smith wrote a 71-page ruling THAT CONTAINS A SECRET CODE. Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh, two of the authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail, contended that Brown stole the plot for his novel from them and thus they deserved to receive some of the revenue from his book. In the New York Times, Sarah Lyall reports that the judge calls his code the “Smithy Code.”
