Food Price Fix

Consumers are rejecting genetically modified fruits and vegetables and turning to organics, which makes the people who run gigantic factory farms unhappy, because they're no longer making as much money as they used to. Not all Wikileaks were about war--one of them revealed how, in a 2008 meeting, trade officials in the US and Spain strategized on how to win consumer acceptance of GM foods by manipulating the commodities market, thus inflating the prices of non-GM items--an especially nasty thing to do when so many people in both countries are jobless. On the Food Freedom website, Rady Ananda writes that during the meeting, the Spanish Secretary of State for International Trade, Pedro Mejia, and US Secretary General Alfredo Bonet "noted that commodity price hikes might spur greater liberalization on biotech imports."

And if the honey you buy doesn't say "Made in the USA on the label," don't eat it! It may be from China where food is unregulated and thus may contain contaminants. In the Globe & Mail, Jessica Leeder writes, "Most honey comes from China, where beekeepers are notorious for keeping their bees healthy with antibiotics banned in North America because they seep into honey and contaminate it--Packers there learn to mask the acrid notes of poor quality product by mixing in sugar or corn-based syrups to fake good taste. "None of this is on the label. Rarely will a jar of honey say “Made in China.” Instead, Chinese honey sold in North America is more likely to be stamped as Indonesian, Malaysian or Taiwanese, due to a growing multimillion dollar laundering system designed to keep the endless supply of cheap and often contaminated Chinese honey moving into the US, where tariffs have been implemented to staunch the flow and protect its own struggling industry.
