Attorney General John Ashcroft said today on CNN’S “Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer” that there could still be terrrorists operating in the US and that more attacks are possible. Ashcroft said, “it’s very unlikely that all of those associated with the attacks of September 11 are now detained or have been detected.”

Before September 11, we were one country. Now we are another. In the old America, we were self-assuredly embarking on what was actually a very strange and forked road. On the one hand, our new administration was promoting globalism and free trade. On the other, it was pursuing a policy of isolation and disengagement. It had more-or-less withdrawn from the Arab-Israeli peace process. Our national defense was being refocused on two things: a massive reduction in our conventional armed forces, and the creation of an anti-missile shield. We were in the process of simultaneously encouraging open borders while at the same time withdrawing from our foreign military commitments.

Fighters at 26 airbases across the United States are in standby alert to protect the 103 nuclear reactors in the country and to react immediately if any aircraft begin moving in an unsual manner or divert from course.

Law enforcement agencies and the armed services within the continental US are at an unprecedented level of alert.

Reactor sites are being considered “part of the homeland defense,” according to Richard Meserve, head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Opinion: If there is going to be another wave of attacks, it is most likely to take place in response to US military action abroad.
