In Europe, Asia, South America, Canada, Mexico and Australia, people are using an incredibly effective sunscreen containing the ingredient Mexoryl, which is illegal in the U.S. “It produces a product which gives us almost perfect protection against sunshine, or at least as good as we can get at this time,” says dermatologist Dr. Vincent Deleo.

Dermatologist Dr. Darrell Rigel says, “Mexoryl is over two times better than any other combination of ingredients that currently exist, in terms of protecting from ultraviolet A radiation.” The sun’s ultraviolet A radiation can penetrate glass and contributes to skin cancer, which strikes a million Americans every year.

The Sun nearly shut down the Earth last November when a wave of massive explosions on the Sun threatened power grids all over the world. This solar flare, which hasn’t been measured until now, was so violent that satellite detectors were unable to record its true size. It shot charged electrical particles and gas into space at two million miles per hour. Scientists in New Zealand say it almost caused unimaginable destruction.

The Earth is surrounded by a magnetic shield that protects us from solar radiation. The problem is, it can leak. Researcher Harald Frey says, "We’ve discovered that our magnetic shield is drafty, like a house with a window stuck open during a storm. The house deflects most of the storm, but the couch is ruined." Can we safely colonize Mars, which does not have a shield to protect us from the sun? Only if we’re careful.

With solar storms at a historic high, NASA is worried about the radiation that’s raining down on astronauts. They’re developing a radiation shield that can be used on spacecraft, shuttles and the International Space Station.

NASA’s Ed Semmes says, “Going anywhere in the solar system or universe will depend on protecting crews from radiation. Lunar exploration, which may be in the near future, and if we chose to go to Mars in the future, will be dependent on this research.”
