John Wichtrich, a top executive from Aventis, the companythat manufactures genetically-modified StarLink corn, saysthe world’s food supply will never be able to get rid of theGM corn. Since StarLink contamination is inevitable,Wichtrich is calling for a change in federal regulations toallow StarLink into human food.

437 million additional bushels of StarLink have been foundin storage, so there is more available than previouslythought and Wichtrich thinks it may as well be used as food. Also, StarLink has widely contaminated the U.S. and Mexicancorn supply, so Wichtrich feels there?s no reason for theEPA to continue to restrict its use. The GM corn is nowapproved only for animal feed and industrial products suchas ethanol.

Scientists now have proof, for the first time, that bacteriain the human intestines can absorb DNA from geneticallymodified food. Although the amount absorbed is small andonly occurs during special circumstances, opponents of GMfoods warn that if intestinal bacteria can absorbantibiotic-resistant genes, this threatens the effectivenessof antibiotics in the human body. When we need to takeantibiotics to fight off infection, they may no longer work.

The discovery was made by Harry Gilbert of the University ofNewcastle upon Tyne in the U.K., who fed a hamburger and amilk shake containing GM soya to 12 healthy volunteers andto 7 volunteers who had previously had their colonssurgically removed.

The European Parliament has voted to introduce stricterlabeling on foods containing genetically modifiedingredients. Right now, only food with more than 1% of GMingredients has to be labeled. This means that GMingredients which do not necessarily show up in testing, such as sugar and oils, would still have to be listed on thelabel. But the parliament has so far failed to agree on lawsto label milk, meat and eggs from animals reared on GM feed.

Friends of the Earth says, “This is a major success forEuropean consumers and a serious defeat for the biotechindustry which has lobbied hard to water down these proposals.”
