There are war problems and there are plastic problems. We’ve explained why plastic baby bottles can be bad for baby boys. Now it turns out that when mothers drink out of plastic bottles when pregnant, it can affect the personalities of their girl babies, when they reach the “terrible twos.”

BPA is commonly used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins that can be found, for example, in some types of plastic bottles, canned food linings, water supply pipes and medical tubing. About 93% of people in the US have detectible levels of BPA in their urine, according to the Centers for Disease Control. if a woman is exposed to BPA early in her pregnancy, development of the baby

It may be hard to believe, but common plastic items we use every day may be extremely dangerous.

Exposure during pregnancy to the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA, found in many common plastic household items, is known to cause a fertility defect in the mother’s offspring in animal studies. Endocrinologist Hugh Taylor says, “The big mystery is how does exposure to this estrogen-like substance during a brief period in pregnancy lead to a change in uterine function.”To find the answer to that question, Taylor and his team injected pregnant mice with a low dose of BPA. After the mice gave birth, they analyzed the uterus of female offspring and extracted DNA.

Now that we’ve discovered what is causing all that prostate cancer, can we do something about the plastic in baby bottles and water bottles?

Canada has already removed BPA from all plastics that contain food or drink (or may be used to hold them). The US has finally acted as well: we have plans to remove this dangerous chemical from baby bottles. And what are we going to do with all these unsold (and unsalable) bottles??we’re going to ship them to the UK and sell them there! This is reminiscent of the days when we discouraged breast feeding in Africa by selling mother cheap baby formula, which they then found out, after their breasts had dried up, was not nutritious enough to nourish their babies.

Will we do the same, or give in to Big Business? – We already know that plastic baby bottles are dangerous for boys. Now Canada says that the same kind of plastic (known as BPA) is poisonous for everyone!

In April 16th edition of the New York Times, Ian Austen reports that the Canadian government is about to declare as toxic a chemical widely used in plastics that we use for eating and drinking. BPA is used in plastics for baby bottles, drink and food containers and the linings of food cans.
