Huge oil reserves have been discovered in the waters that surround Cuba. Income from this unexpected windfall could tip the balance of the Cuban economy from Communist to capitalist and give us a great non-Middle Eastern place to buy oil (as long as we drop our Cold War era sanctions against that country). However, off-shore drilling could ALSO be another disaster for Florida beaches, if there is a BP-type oil spill.

What is "fracking?" It’s removing natural gas from the ground–and there is LOTS of it right here in the US, so if we produce cars that run on natural gas (as lots of trucks do already), then we can solve our oil dependency problems. HOWEVER, fracking uses LOTS of water (which we are ALSO short on) AND it is not necessarily emission-free.

More than we realize – Here’s another reason we need alternative energy sources like solar energy: If all the oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico had been used for fuel, it could have powered 38,000 cars, 3,400 trucks and 1,800 ships for a full year, based on the estimated spill rate of 19,000 barrels of oil per day.
