We’ve reported before that animals can’t survive on genetically-modified food. Now a new study from Australia shows that GM food KILLS rats.

In the December 5th edition of the Herald Sun, Jeffrey Smith reports that almost 10 years ago, researcher Arpad Pusztai discovered that GM food caused “massive damage in rats.” The result? “Dr. Pusztai was fired after 35 years and silenced with threats of a lawsuit.”

Smith also writes about California researcher Ignacio Chapela, who published evidence that GM corn is wiping out indigenous Mexican corn, which is an essential part of the diet there. He received a phone call from a Mexican government official who told him, “We know where your children go to school.”

Federal Courts have ruled against the USDA in three cases for failing to carry out proper environment impact assessment, making their original approvals of GM crops illegal. One of the biggest problems with these crops is that they pollute nearby fields, something that is especially worrisome to farmers who grow organic crops, which are becoming more popular every day.

Special crops that are planted to be turned into ethanol?which work better than corn?could become a generation of invasive superweeds if we’re not careful.

As the United States looks to crops as possible future sources of energy, researcher Robert N. Wiedenmann calls for caution, citing the possibility of some biofuel crops becoming invasive species. He says, “Most of the traits that are touted as great for biofuel crops?no known pests or diseases, rapid growth, high water-use efficiency?are red flags for invasion biologists.”

The controversy over genetically-modified food is becoming a thing of the past. The new controversy is over nano food.

Many new kinds of food?for both humans and animals?will be coming out soon, all based on nanotechnology. Examples are a super nutritious chocolate milkshake (which isn’t needed in the West, where we all get plenty to eat) and chicken feed that removed dangerous bacteria from poultry. Since most chickens produced in the US are infected with salmonella, this could be important. But is nano food dangerous?
