In the past, we’ve warned men that riding a bike can ruin your sex life. Now it turns out this is true for women too: Spending time on a bicycle seat, which has been linked to erectile dysfunction in men, may also be a hazard to a woman’s sexual health. With more and more women taking spin classes, we may be becoming a sexless society.

In the April 3rd edition of the New York Times, Anahad O’Connor reports that bike seats are designed in such a way that body weight typically rests on the nose of the seat, which compresses nerves and blood vessels in the genital area. A 2006 study found that while this has less of an effect on women, the same risk is still there.

…Freeze your sperm! – Now that the Tour de France is on, scientists want to remind would-be professional cyclists (and the rest of us?) that they should consider freezing their sperm before spending too much time on that bike.

When men who had been training on bicycles for an average of nine times a week for eight years were compared to men who spent an ordinary amount of time on bikes, they were found to have less than 10% normal looking sperm, compared with 15-20% in the most fertile men. Sperm may also be affected by riding stationary bikes at the gym, so males should be careful to vary their exercise routine.

In Wired.com, Leander Kahney quotes bike store owner Kevin Menard as saying, “The gas prices are the best thing that ever happened to cycling. He quotes bike advocate Tim Blumenthal as saying, “[Biking] bucks the general economic trends. There doesn’t seem to be many businesses that are thriving, but the bike business is doing very well.”

We’ve written before that riding a bike can be the end of a man’s sex life. Now we’ve learned that it can be the end of a woman’s sexuality as well.

Women who ride bicycles frequently may have less genital sensitivity, and sometimes even pain. LiveScience.com quotes researcher Martha Guess as saying, “While seated on a bicycle, the external genital nerve and artery are directly compressed. It is possible that chronic compression of the female genital area may lead to compromised blood flow and nerve injury due to disruption of the blood-nerve barrier.”
